Prophet
The office of prophet in OT and NT
The office of prophet spans both Testaments. OT prophets spoke forth God's word to kings and nations; NT prophets edify, exhort, and comfort the church. This study explores the calling, function, and accountability of prophets, from Moses and Jeremiah to the prophetic ministry described in 1 Corinthians and Ephesians.

Summary by Book
Amos
1Jeremiah
1Genesis
1Exodus
1Deuteronomy
8“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of bondage, to entice you from the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,
I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’
when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.
1 Samuel
3And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of the Lord.
After that you shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is. And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.
Numbers
1Ephesians
11 Corinthians
1Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
Acts
1Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
