Poverty

When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.

And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God.

If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother.

For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.

For the needy shall not always be forgotten; the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever.

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, says the Lord; I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.

This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

Blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

For He will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor also, and him who has no helper.

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.

He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given.

Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard.

He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Therefore, because you tread down the poor and take grain taxes from him, though you have built houses of hewn stone, yet you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine from them.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus said to him, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.

for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
